Faces of Weston with Jackie Bruder of Mended Minds

Did you know that an estimated 8% of American have suffered at some time from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD.  To put that in perspective, that’s over 24 million Americans which is more than the population of Florida.  Those rates become even more alarming for first responders.  There are estimates of up to 37% for PTSD among firefighters.

With PTSD having such an impact on our community of Weston; we wanted to learn more.  This month we sat down with Jackie Bruder; who has a lifetime of experience in the fire service industry and now helps people who struggle with PTSD.  We will learn about her company, her background, what she is passionate about and why she chose Lakeside Executive Suites

Tell us about your company and what you do?

Mended Minds is state of the art technology that helps persons with a multitude of ailments like PTSD, TBI (Trauma Brain Injury) Concussion syndrome, Depression, Anxiety, Migraines, Insomnia, ADD/ADHD, & persons on the Autism spectrum.

Various studies have shown a common thread between a neurological disorder or dysfunction and increased levels of delta brainwave activity.  This increased delta wave activity causes a release of chemicals and hormones which keep our bodies and minds in a constant state of fight or flight.  Some people live in a constant state of fight or flight for years, even some since birth, which can lead to years of pain and misery for the patient and their family.  Most modern treatment modalities are only treating symptoms not the core issue.

The Mended Minds team can make a difference in your life by using a full approach, focusing on mind, body, and lifestyle.  Mended Minds uses The IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback System to help reboot your brain and restore its natural state of being, which has been shown to be over 85% effective in reducing the symptoms associated with these neurological disorders.

How did you get started in your industry?

Prior to opening Mended Minds, I spent the past 30 years in the fire service as a firefighter paramedic with Miami Dade Fire Rescue.  I spent considerable amount of time watching human suffering, including those of my fellow Firefighters.  Watching children lose their parents, parents lose their children…it changes you, and sometimes those changes don’t fade.  You also have the opportunity to save lives in ways you never imagined possible.  Delivering babies, reviving people from plane crashes, diving into a canal at night with SCUBA gear to pull out a mom while her child watched on the shoreline.  So after I retired from the fire department, life seemed a bit slow, empty…that is where Mended Minds came in.  A way of helping our own, the firefighters who are suffering from PTSD, helping people in ways we could not help before.  Giving back in a whole new way.

What is something about your business that most people do not know?

Most people know nothing about our business!  Though a form of the technology was developed 50 years ago, our technology is presently the only one of its kind that has image based evidence of its success.  Presently, after treating military personnel with severe PTSD, the federal government has given the founder of our system (IASIS) a multi-million dollar grant with the University of South California to document the changes to the brain using a MEG.  A MEG lab allows visual changes in the brain to be documented in real time, visually..during the session.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

Our goal is to open offices all over the state of Florida to give access to those in need.

Tell me about yourself?

I come from a big family f six brothers and one sister.  I am married with 4 children and a houseful of pets.  We live in Davie, horse country, where everyone knows each other and people actually help their neighbors.  We ride around in golf carts and enjoy our kids playing together.  I love people and animals and spend most of my time with one or the other!

Other than work, what are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about raising our children to be independent, thoughtful, considerate, humble givers.  In a world that seems to lean toward the negative…I would like them to sway toward the positive.  To recognize suffering and be a part of the solution.  To give less than they take and appreciate the beauty of our planet.

What types of activities or hobbies do you enjoy outside of work?

I love verything outdoors including water skiing, scuba diving, fishing, snow skiing, and long walks on the beach.

Why did you choose Lakeside and how has working here helped your business?

The people..hands down is the main reason.  Everyone is extremely friendly and happy to help at Lakeside Executive Suites.  I love the way it has open spaces to work and plenty of light coming in from the outdoors.  Last, but not least….location, location, location..it’s extremely easy for our patients to come off the expressway to find us!

Five Tips to Maintain a Healthy Relationship with Social Media

The rise of social media has changed the way we view the world. More than 70 percent of Americans are actively engaged on at least one social platform, but if we’re talking about millennials, that number climbs to about 98 percent.

In business, these numbers are too significant to ignore. If every customer you want to reach is on social, it stands to reason you want to reach them in that way. It’s part of your marketing strategy, it helps you generate new leads, and it’s a way to stay on top of the competition.

And what about your personal social profiles? Everybody’s got a few. The average person in the United States maintains seven social profiles. At the end of the day, that’s a lot of time spent on social. At some point, if you don’t get a handle on it, it’s going to start to affect your real-world, terrestrial life.

But how do you turn away when there’s so much going on all the time?

The truth is, turning away will do you, your relationships, your productivity, and your psyche a lot of good. The problem is, that’s easier said than done.

Here are our five top tips for maintaining a healthy relationship with social media:

1.    Schedule your daily social media time

Determine a set amount of time to update your pages, post content, and respond to messages on social. Set the timer on your smartphone and don’t ignore it when it goes off.

2.    If you really want to talk to your friend, call them

Along with being a super-computer, a CMS, and a fabulous camera, your smartphone is actually an excellent tool for making phone calls. Miss that person? Give them a call! Don’t have their phone number? They’re probably not your friend.

3.    Disable social notifications

Notifications are a great way to kick your social media anxiety into high gear. In your settings, you’ll find that you can disable them. This way, you can check in during your allotted time (see #1) and otherwise just get on with life.

4.    Embrace the moment

Authenticity is cool. Authenticity is all about being who you are. However, you can’t be authentic if you’re always focused on what other people are doing. Take the time to revel in your own life. Make your own moments. Because there is nothing more authentic than just being yourself.

5.    Choose your social platforms wisely

In business, as in life, there’s no point in investing time into something that you’re not going to get any value from. Having too many social profiles dilutes your efforts, and if you aren’t active on them, it could actually do more harm than good. Choose the platforms that are most beneficial to you and delete the rest.

Why Larger Companies are Choosing Coworking Spaces

Since their first appearance in the 1990s, coworking spaces and shared workspaces in general, have been disrupting the way we all get things done.

The fact is, many of the world’s top corporations, GM, IBM, and Microsoft among them, are renting coworking space. In 2018, big companies like these accounted for 30 percent of coworking’s monthly business.

Here are some of the reasons why larger companies are choosing coworking spaces today:

Coworking is more cost-effective for larger companies

Per square foot, a coworking membership is far less expensive than traditional office space

With more and more of the workforce opting to work outside of the office, coworking spaces are seen as a more viable choice, financially.

Coworking memberships give companies a way to offer their employees the tools and support they need without having to allocate permanent office space, workstations, parking spaces, and so on. It is also an easy way to scale up or down as the need dictates – and you’ll never have to worry about not having enough office space – or having a bunch of empty offices.

Coworking offers a better workplace experience

Trends aside, studies show that more than half of all employees of enterprise companies are looking for new jobs. Gallup’s State of the American Workplace found that 85 percent of enterprise employees are disengaged at work.

These alarming statistics are, in part, urging large companies to find ways to offer their employees a better workplace experience. Coworking spaces contribute to company culture in a positive way and chances are, if an employee is happy in their workspace, they may stay in their jobs longer.

Coworking offers proximity to innovation

With a booming gig economy, top talent is getting harder and harder to nail down. Coworking spaces, especially those that cater to the tech sector, are a hotbed of talent, giving larger companies easy access to the innovation they so dearly seek.

The collaborative element is so prevalent in coworking spaces that it’s relatively easy to connect with talent this way. Along with the cost savings and vibrant atmosphere, it’s a way to add value without taking on the expense of recruitment and full-time payroll.

Coworking helps large companies expand into new markets

For companies looking to expand into new territory, a coworking space provides a way to establish a base of operations and test the waters quickly. Companies save time by not having to secure office space in advance, and they save money by not having to invest in technology or other office amenities. It’s a turnkey situation from which just about every corporation can find benefit.
