Closest places to Florida to see fall foliage
Posted On November 16, 2018 Posted By: Jason Tiemeier

While we’ve got pretty much the best of everything here in Florida, one of the things we miss out on is the riot of color that the fall foliage brings to the northern climes. However, there are a few places within easy driving distance where you can drink it all in while it lasts – and some of them are right here in our state!

If you are hoping to experience the beauty of autumn foliage, we’ve got you covered. Head for the hills! Higher elevations bring cooler temperatures and that’s what nature needs to get those reds and oranges going.

Here are some of our top picks for the closest places in and around Florida for fall foliage:

Torreya State Park

Just west of Tallahassee you’ll find Torreya State Park. Its high bluffs overlook the Apalachicola River whose slopes are replete with Acer maples, sweetgum, and sourwood trees. Late October is the time to go if you want to experience fall color here in all its splendor. Note that currently the park itself is closed due to storm damage from Hurricane Michael, but surrounding areas of Bristol are still accessible to traffic.

Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park

Traveling south from Tallahassee, you’ll find plenty of maple trees in full regalia at Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park. Boat tours are available too, where you’ll be able to see the sights while touring some of the state’s deepest freshwater springs and discover places where dinosaurs used to roam free.

Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail

Here, you’ll get the best of the fall season in a uniquely Floridian way: imagine seeing colorful trees, dolphins, manatees, and whales all in the same excursion! The 30-mile loop takes you through some of the state’s oldest forests as well as pre-civil war plantations, lagoons, and more. Storm advisories recommend checking road closures before setting out.

Out-of-state fall foliage destinations

If you’re up for a slightly more ambitious excursion, you can always venture out-of-state. North Carolina, Georgia, and parts of Alabama are gorgeous in the fall – and what better excuse is there to get out of town and explore the majesty of the season?

Asheville, NC, in the western part of the state, is well-known for its fall foliage. The Blue Ridge Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains feature 6,000-foot elevations, supporting one of the longest fall color seasons in the country. With a window that lasts up to five weeks or more, you’ve still got plenty of time to plan a long weekend trip.

If you’re looking for a little urban adventure to go with your nature-tripping, try Atlanta, GA, on for size. The landscape surrounding the city is blazing with color right now and you can spend your evenings discovering Atlanta’s nightlife or culinary scene.

Lakeside Executive Suites is dedicated to supporting local businesses in Weston, FL, with flexible office solutions that answer every need. Drop by for a tour today and find out how we can help you get things done.

What is the future of coworking?
Posted On October 26, 2018 Posted By: Jason Tiemeier

Office work, these days, bears little resemblance to that of our predecessors. Millennials, reportedly, tend to stay in jobs an average of five years, and according to research, most would prefer to work at home or in coworking spaces rather than commuting to an office.

Office and workspace trends

Shared office space aside, remote working and virtual offices are a growing trend. As communications and cloud technology continues to improve, we should expect to see continued movement in this direction.

Coworking spaces allow companies to grow without investing in new office space and equipment. This delivers value straight back to the bottom line and supports teamwork, networking, and employee comfort. They provide an affordable way for freelancers and entrepreneurs to have access to professional office amenities without eating up their entire operating budget.

In general, coworking has revolutionized the way we work; this is something we can all generally agree on. But if we know what the advantages are – budget-friendly, space-saving, collaborative – what does the future hold?

What the experts say about the future of coworking

According to several experts, more of the same – but, with an increased focus on interdisciplinary interaction and increased flexibility.

Christa Freeland, one of the founders of Switch Cowork, offers that coworking is popping up in areas you wouldn’t expect, such as at the gym, in a restaurant or within office supply stores. This provides options for customers to work when they need to work. It also provides an opportunity for these businesses to make use of space they wouldn’t normally be using during slow times of the day.

Bjorn Rosinus, CEO and founder of Endeavour Innovative Workspaces, cites the ongoing need for collaboration and economy, spurring a shift away from long-term leases and the embrace of more flexible, shared solutions.

Najeeb Khan, innovation strategist and founder of 1For, cites the growing adoption of AI and automation as an arbiter of coworking need. When it is not required that an employee be present for repetitive daily tasks, employees will spend more time networking and collaborating – which is what a coworking space delivers. Khan also offers that coworking will be a preferred option to commuting and a viable alternative to telecommuting that puts teams in touch with each other in a way they simply can’t when working from home.

Matt Poepsel of The Predictive Index cites sociopsychological factors as a driving force in the future of coworking. Some of the indicators that contribute to this thought include the need for a flexible lifestyle, the proliferation of freelancers, and the isolation that is often felt by people who work at home. Poepsel points to the need that most people have to seek interaction as well as the rejuvenating aspects of connection. The role of technology also plays into his summation as advances in this direction, he says, will always run counter to our socially-driven human nature.

So, is coworking here to stay? We say yes! Through its many incarnations and missteps, its original intent remains the strongest: that of providing a place to work for those who would otherwise be stuck in solitary. Its other advantages are truly their own reward.

Lakeside Office Suites in Weston, FL, provides virtual office packages, on-demand meeting rooms, flexible office space, and—yes—coworking spaces that fit your needs and your budget. If you are still not sure about coworking but want to give it a try, contact us to book a free coworking day.

Top Tips for holding effective interviews
Posted On October 12, 2018 Posted By: Jason Tiemeier

Interviews are important on many levels. No matter the reason and no matter which side of the desk you are sitting on, it’s crucial to keep in mind that an interview can make or break a relationship. It can begin one, or, it can end one before it even begins.

The success of the exchange lies as much with the interviewer as it does the interviewee, but let’s talk about you. You’ve got a full plate as it is, but you have several candidates to meet with. You don’t have the luxury of an HR department and you need the process to go as smoothly as possible so you can get the results you need and get back to what you do.

Here are our top 10 tips on how to get the most out of your interview:

Before the interview:

1.Know the job that you are offering

Familiarize yourself with every detail of the job and its requirements. That way, you will be in a better position to assess whether the candidate has the basic goods to do the job.

2.Get to know your candidate

Review your candidate’s CV and work history. Take a close look at everything he or she submitted during the application process – cover letter, references, and so on. Make careful note of any employment gaps, ambiguous job titles or personal information that may have a bearing on their future performance.

3.Create an interview agenda

There may be several areas you want to cover. Determine how much time you have for the interview and set time limits on certain aspects so you can get everything you need covered. Be sure you start on time as much as you can. This will demonstrate that you respect your interviewee’s time as well as your own.

4.Prepare interview questions in advance

As you go through the candidate’s CV and portfolio, make note of any specific questions you want to ask about their work. Think along the lines of what you need and prepare questions that help you determine whether or not they will meet those expectations.

On the day of the meeting:

5.Meet in a professional environment

First impressions are everything! Even if you are an entrepreneur or startup who doesn’t have a physical office space, it’s important to project a professional appearance. On-demand meeting rooms are an affordable way to host interviews – and it’s a great way to lay the groundwork for a working relationship.

6.Give your interviewee 100 percent of your attention

Make sure you have a quiet environment for the interview. Choose a location that is comfortable and has a minimum of distractions. Mute your phone, send calls to voicemail, ask to not be disturbed.

7.Ask behavioral questions

Ask for specific examples of how the candidate handled certain stressful situations and ask for both good and not-so-good scenarios. Asking behavioral questions will give you a good idea of how they will handle similar situations for you.

And finally, never forget the golden rule of interviewing: Listen first. Because you’ll never learn anything if you are the one doing all the talking.

The Booming Economy of Fort Lauderdale
Posted On September 28, 2018 Posted By: Jason Tiemeier

These days, Fort Lauderdale is booming as a surge of new developments underscores the city’s current status as a “city of choice” for commercial and residential real estate investors. As a city that has long been seen as playing second fiddle to Miami in terms of market growth, developers are flocking to this South Florida jewel to take advantage of lower prices and a strengthening business community.

Ft. Lauderdale: A city on the move

A new focus on luxury amenities and services serves the needs of the growing residential base, and the tourist economy is getting an upgrade too as the Four Seasons completes a $200 million renovation at their West Ft. Lauderdale property. The $500 million Auberge Beach Residences and Spa is another such project, offering luxury beachfront living at its finest. To support and service the new influx of high-end pleasure seekers, more than 1000 new restaurant seats are soon to be seen as well, many focused on Las Olas, the city’s premier dining, shopping, and entertainment district.

A clear indicator of the evolution is the ever-changing skyline as developers are tapped to add thousands of new residential units over the next two years. An additional injection of cash is directed towards improvements for existing hotel properties in the city, courtesy of investors who were quick to recognize the growing popularity of the area.

Accessible oceanfront living in South Florida

But before you think Ft. Lauderdale is only for the rich and privileged, the cost of living here, in general, is very reasonable. Unemployment is very low, with reports showing that 95.4 percent of the population is employed full-time. With a median annual income of about $51,000, there is a very good standard of living to be had without breaking the proverbial bank.

Ft. Lauderdale offers a distinct business advantage

Many new companies choose to set up shop in Ft. Lauderdale for many reasons. Besides the obvious perks – the fabulous South Florida lifestyle, great weather, stunning scenery, and a vibrant culture – Ft. Lauderdale boasts the most diverse labor force in the state (90 languages are spoken here!), some of the most respected public schools and more than 35 post-secondary colleges, universities, and business schools.

As a business center, it is home to more than 150 major corporations while new companies find it attractive because of Florida’s favorable business tax climate. There is also no state income tax, which is a big draw for people seeking employment in tandem with a great quality of life.

Companies that do business globally find Ft. Lauderdale to be very convenient as it has three major commercial airports that lend easy proximity to Latin America as well as domestic and international destinations. Seven more airports in the region are dedicated to business and executive travel and Ft. Lauderdale’s port is the number one container port in the state as well as the top seaport for exports in Florida.

Are you doing business in Florida or thinking about launching a branch of your business here? Lakeside Executive Suites is South Florida’s destination for professional, flexible office services including meeting rooms on-demand, coworking facilities, virtual offices, and short-term office rental. Best habits to cultivate to achieve work-life balance
Posted On September 12, 2018 Posted By: Jason Tiemeier

You’re a successful entrepreneur. You love working for yourself and things are going well. However, even if you love your work like you love breathing air, everyone has to take some downtime in order to feel fulfilled and happy in the long-term. Work-life balance is an essential part of wellness and cultivating some good habits to achieve it will actually help you improve your productivity, not the opposite.

Here are some great habits to get into in the effort to achieve better work-life balance:

1.    Set boundaries

In our 24/7 uber-connected world, there is an expectation of being able to reach somebody at any hour of the day, any day of the week. In reality, this is not sustainable. You need to set clear boundaries for yourself in order to maintain your sanity. Whether it’s not responding to work email or calls after a certain hour or vowing to not look at your phone on date night, you need to create a separation between you and your work. The work, after all, will still be there when you’re ready to dive back in. Your significant other, maybe not so much.

2.    Unplug, disconnect

Whether you realize it or not, technology causes a great deal of anxiety. If you are constantly connected, you aren’t giving yourself the chance to unwind and be yourself. Even if you identify yourself with your work, you need to take time to focus on other things too. By sticking to this rule you will be freeing up time for others who care about you and giving yourself a much-needed respite. Once you power up again, you will be fully recharged and ready for what comes next. To help disconnect, there are answering services for entrepreneurs that will even answer all your business calls for you.

3.    Take real vacations

It happens all the time in this day and age: we take time off and jet away, only to become embroiled in work activities the moment we hit the tarmac at our destination. Removing yourself from work takes some effort, though. You need to let your clients and colleagues know that you will not be available between certain dates. Let them know who they can speak to while you’re gone and then absolve yourself of responsibility. You might just rediscover a lost part of yourself in the process.

4.    Plan social activities

If you’re a self-described “workaholic”, your friends probably know they can’t count on you for much. But think about how lonely it will be when the work is all done and you don’t have any friends anymore. Make time for your friends, family, and loved ones by scheduling time for them. This will let them know that you truly care about them and it will help you build stronger relationships outside of work. Studies show that an active social life can help boost productivity because you are able to clear your head and come back to your responsibilities with renewed focus.

Tips for working parents to stay involved in kids school work
Posted On August 26, 2018 Posted By: Jason Tiemeier

It’s that season again … back to school has arrived and with it, homework. If you are a busy entrepreneur and worried about how much time you will be able to devote to your kids’ schoolwork this coming year, we’ve got a few handy tips for you to help you stay involved without having to neglect your business or work.

1. Working parent tip #1: Leave work at work

Defining a clear separation between work and home life is important in the effort to be involved in your kids’ lives. Disconnect, put down the phone, and step away from your laptop; your kids might already view your work ethic as threatening to their time with you. Even if your office is in your home, set clearly defined hours for work and when it’s family time, be 100 percent present for them.

2. Working parent tip #2: Work on your time management skills

If you are finding it difficult to fit in everything you need to do in a day, maybe it’s time to start a more rigorous scheduling process. Pretty much everything can be scheduled, whether it’s meal times, shopping or family activities. For those of you who live by your calendar, this might be an easy way to ensure you are giving your family the time they so rightly deserve.

3. Working parent tip #3: Split homework time with your spouse

Studies show that 20 percent of kids don’t get any reading support from their mother and 40 percent don’t get it from their father. As a result, almost 20 percent of kids will grow up not knowing how to read or write as well as they should. Your kids shouldn’t have to go it alone and neither should you. Splitting homework time with your spouse may give you a better chance of devoting enough time to your children’s needs without raising your anxiety level around not getting your own work done.

4. Working parent tip #4: Do homework as early as possible

You might be exhausted when you get home – and tempted to put homework on hold until you have a chance to unwind. The truth is, kids’ brains tucker out quickly after a full day at school, so striking while the iron is hot is always the best strategy. Set a couple of hours aside as close to “school’s out” time as possible, say from three to five in the afternoon. Don’t start later than five or wait until after dinner or you run the risk of the lot of you burning out or moving on to other activities.

5. Working parent tip #5: Set a great example

Ultimately, we want our kids to be grounded and be able to make good decisions for themselves in life. This is a skill that comes from you. If you are constantly distracted or unable to devote time to your children after school, they will probably think that what they are doing is unimportant and so will not give it their all. Demonstrate the work ethic and family focus that you would ideally like them to have and they will always take your lead.

Has back to school got you in a panic? If you are a busy entrepreneur who needs a little support so you can spend more quality time with your family, we can help with flexible, scalable office space, virtual offices, coworking, and full-service administrative support. Drop by for a tour today.

The many benefits of offsite meetings
Posted On August 16, 2018 Posted By: Jason Tiemeier

Meetings are an essential component of any business. Meetings connect your departments, provide a forum for ideas and innovation, strengthen your company culture and your employees to stay in touch with your company’s mission and vision. That said, there are many benefits to conducting your meetings off-site.

Let’s look at some of the ways that offsite meetings can help:

1.    Offsite meetings minimize distractions

When your staff is away from their normal working environment, they will be less tempted to wander off or worry about calls they are missing, and so on. A change of scenery reduces stress and often provides a boost in productivity that can be energizing and highly stimulating.

2.    Offsite meetings feel special

Your employees likely don’t get the opportunity to spend time working outside of the office. Offsite meetings encourage them to express themselves more freely and will likely lead to better retention of the information you cover during this time.

3.    Offsite meetings are great for team building

Being outside of the office gives your employees a chance to get to know each other better. They will be better able to understand how their unique skillsets complement those of their colleagues and the process will serve to strengthen your company culture in the process.

4.    Offsite meetings give you access to technology you may not otherwise have

If your office operates on a lean budget, you may not have access to all the bells and whistles of a high-tech environment. Choosing an offsite meeting space will provide you with the latest audiovisual equipment as well as next-generation conferencing and webinar technology. Having these tools at hand will help you bring your work to life in ways you couldn’t normally do. Additionally, if you work with remote teams, video conferencing technology can be very helpful as it will allow your home office group to get to know colleagues who work from other locations and collaborate with them in real-time.

5.    Offsite meetings boost productivity

There is nothing like a fresh environment to stimulate the creative flow. Studies show that an offsite meeting space encourages out-of-the-box thinking, which could lead to major innovation as well as creative solutions to problems you deal with every day.

6.    Offsite meetings give you a chance to connect with your team

While you may work with your teams on a daily basis, how often do you get to sit down with them in an intimate setting and really see and hear what they have to offer? Having a direct connection with your employees will foster loyalty and openness and will provide a level of comfort between you and others that may not have existed otherwise.

Lakeside Executive Suites in Weston, Florida, is dedicated to empowering small businesses, startups, and entrepreneurs with flexible office solutions designed to help you grow. Our on-demand meeting rooms come fully equipped with today’s communications technology, helping you accomplish more without breaking the budget. Call today or schedule a tour to find out more.

Things to do to prepare for hurricane season in Florida
Posted On July 25, 2018 Posted By: Jason Tiemeier

Hurricane season is upon us and with it comes thoughts of how bad it’s going to be and what we can do to plan. Though we’d all like to think that this year, maybe we’ll be spared, the reality is that doing nothing is probably the worst possible strategy.

To help you stay on top of it, we’ve put together some tips to help you prepare for hurricane season – because being ready is far better than bearing the brunt of it without a plan in place.

Plan your evacuation route in advance

When hurricanes hit, we often see an unusual and incredibly rapid surge in water level. This could mean flooding – even if you don’t live along the coastal areas. When the evacuation call comes down, you need to be ready to move fast. This means knowing where to go and what route you are going to take. Check the City of Weston website in advance of coming storms to get up-to-date information on local shelters and evacuation procedures.

Prepare an evacuation kit

Having a well-equipped kit on hand in case of emergency could mean the difference between your survival and having to depend on others for it. Pack your kit into a large, air and water-tight plastic bin and make sure it’s in a handy place so you can grab it and go when you need to.

Some of the items you should include in your kit:

- Clean socks and underwear
- A spare pair of shoes
- Battery-operated or hand-crank radio
- A variety of batteries
- Flashlight
- Flares
- Strike-anywhere matches
- Lighter
- Protein bars
- Non-perishable nutrient-dense foods
- A few gallons of water
- Toiletries: shampoo, soap, toothpaste, etc.
- Blanket/sleeping bag
- Local maps
- Whistle to signal for help
- First aid kit
- Copies of your property deeds, ownerships, and insurance certs “just in case”
- Pet food and supplies (if you have pets)

Make copies of your most important documents

After a major storm, there is no telling what resources you may have to access. Make sure you have copies of all your insurance policies, ownerships, and land titles just to be sure you can prove your claims if the need arises. Put these copies in a safe, water-tight zip-lock and keep them in your evacuation kit.

Back up all your computers and devices

If your computers are lost, you can still access all your data – if it’s backed up to the cloud. Backup your data to a cloud backup service to be sure your personal information will always be accessible when you need it most.

Seek out local pet shelters and animal services

If you have pets, be sure you know where you can take them in case of an impending storm event. Whatever you do – don’t leave them behind! Be prepared by making sure they are up-to-date with all their shots and have adequate carriers ready to take them to safety. Many shelters accept pets, but it’s always good to be on the safe side.

Boating and water safety tips for South Florida recreation
Posted On May 16, 2018 Posted By: Jason Tiemeier

The summertime is prime boating season here in South Florida, so it’s never a bad idea to bone up on boating and water safety tips for South Florida recreation. Many of our members are keen on getting out on the water as often as possible, whether for fishing, diving, snorkeling, water sports, or just to enjoy the gorgeous, sparkling, warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Safety first

But safety should always come first. There is nothing that will taint a summer outing on the water faster than a preventable injury, accident or—worst-case scenario—drowning. Even experienced boaters have fallen victim to largely preventable mishaps, so even if you feel great confidence in your skills, it’s always best to err on the side of safety. You’ll be doing yourself a favor and protecting your friends and loved ones from harm.

To help you get the most out of your summer boating adventures, we’ve put together our top tips on how to stay safe on the water.

Stay sober

Drinking alcohol while boating can, at the very least, get you arrested for DUI. At worst, it could seriously impact your ability to respond in case of an emergency. Save the drinking for dry land.

Wear life jackets

Every boat should have enough life jackets for everybody on board. They should all be safety-approved and be the proper size for the person wearing it. Be sure to check for fit before heading out.

Tell a friend where you are going

If you are staying at a hotel, let the front desk know where you are going. Conversely, tell a friend or colleague what you are up to and where you are headed and when you expect to be back. On the off chance if you don’t arrive back on schedule, knowing your plans will help to spur fast action to locate you and bring you in safely.

Check the weather

South Florida weather can change in a heartbeat. It might look clear and perfect when you set out, but things can get ugly very quickly, leaving you no time to take cover. Make sure you check a reliable weather service to be sure there is no chance you will get caught in a storm.

Keep children within arm’s reach

Accidental drowning can happen in seconds. Always keep children within arm’s reach so you can be there to help “just in case”. Even if they are strong swimmers, make sure they are equipped with proper floatation devices such as life jackets. Floaties and pool toys don’t really cut it in open water.

Hire a boat captain

One of the greatest advantages to living in Florida is that we’ve got so many resources to help us get the most out of the water. A boat captain can take you to places you wouldn’t find on your own. They know the area—including the dangerous parts—and will take care of the business of navigation while you are your friends and family relax and enjoy to the fullest.

Boating in South Florida is a great way to spend a day on the water, but safety always comes first. Be sure you are following proper water safety procedures so you will come back with only good memories. Do you have any great water safety tips? We’d love to hear about them! Drop us a line at Lakeside Executive Suites today and share your thoughts.

Achieving and maintaining a good work-life balance
Posted On April 20, 2018 Posted By: Jason Tiemeier

These days, our “always on” work ethic threatens more than just our free time. With our health—mental and physical—at stake, and with expectations at an all-time high, establishing a healthy work-life balance is becoming more and more difficult. To maintain our sanity and stay effective at what we do, it’s more important than ever to find time to disconnect and reconnect with the things that make us feel good.

Even high-achievers, for whom a seven-day workweek plus daily overtime is a badge of honor, need to refocus occasionally. Studies have shown, time and time again, that we are not operating at our peak if we ignore the need for balance.

While what works for one might not work for another, there is always a way to make it happen. Here are a few tips that are meant to stimulate further discussion as to how you can achieve better work-life balance for yourself and support your employees or peers to do the same.

1. Define what you need and then make sure you get it

Make a list of the things that are important to you in life. Prioritize your list in order of importance and make adjustments to your schedule to accommodate these needs. They might include sleeping eight hours a night, getting exercise, helping your kids with their homework or spending quality time with your significant other. If you need to leave work at a certain time to accomplish any of these goals, make sure it happens. Chances are your work will still be waiting for you when you come back in the morning – and think about how much better you will feel when you don’t have the guilt of skipping these activities.

2. Set clear boundaries

When you respond to a client’s texts or emails late at night, over the weekend or when you’re supposed to be on vacation, you may be inviting their dependence on your availability. This can seriously encroach on your personal time and will eventually make you crazy. Set clear boundaries and stick to them. Unless you are a doctor, you are probably not dealing with life-or-death situations, so don’t kill yourself to do favors for people who will probably start pushing those boundaries the moment they have the chance. Remember – you matter too!

3. Optimize your workflow

Many a-type personalities fall into the trap of trying to control every little thing on their desk. In reality, your time is valuable. Repetitive tasks can be automated or delegated, freeing you up for higher-value activities and hypothetically leaving you more time for yourself at the end of the day. Look at the things that you do daily: are the things you do really the best use of your time? If not, look at ways you can make these processes more efficient.

4. Disconnect

Disconnecting is important: from your technology, from your phone, from your schedule. Whether you do it for a couple of hours a day, a whole day every week, or for the weekend, it will provide you with a much-needed separation from your day-to-day routine. When you come back to it, you will be able to approach your work from a refreshed perspective.

If you live and work in Weston, Florida, we would love to hear how you approach work-life balance. Give us a call or drop by for a tour today.
